Vintage Aboriginal
Bark Paintings

now through March 31st
The indigenous people of Australia have painted on bark for hundreds, if not thousands of years.  Using only the most elemental tools and colors,  they developed a style of painting and visual iconography that transcends their place and time.   This painting style which allows for regional variations  parallels the art found in the caves and  on the canyon walls of their land.  The X-Ray style which depicts the inner organs of the subject whether animal or  spirit is specific to their culture as well as the imagery of the mimi spirits who live in the rocks, grasses and waters of their world.
